چکیده

We investigated the conventional characterisation and biological treatability of wastewaters of the “Izmit Industrial and Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plant”. Respirometric procedures were carried out for the experimental assessment of organic contents of wastewater. The mean value of total COD was 1201 mg·l-1 and varied within a wide range of 580 to 1822 mg·l-1 for the 14 different influents. The soluble COD concentrations were evaluated to vary in the range of 168 to1061 mg·l-1, with a mean value of 615 mg·l-1. The readily biodegradable organic substance, SS is between 0.03 to 0.24% of the influent total COD. The BOD5/total COD ratio in the influent was calculated as 0.20 to be a mean value. The evaluation of this result, wastewater was not suitable for biological treatment. But, the results of COD fractionation studies indicate that the organic content of wastewater is mostly biodegradable (84-92%). Therefore, conventional wastewater characterisation does not enable for a reliable design of biological treatment processes.

A quantitative method to evaluate microbial electrolysis cell effectiveness for energy recovery and wastewater treatment

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are potential candidates for sustainable wastewater treatment as they allow for recovery of the energy input by producing valuable chemicals such as hydrogen gas. Evaluating the effectiveness of MEC treatment for different wastewaters requires new approaches to quantify performance, and the establishment of specific procedures and parameters to characterize t...

Treatability Evaluation of Municipal Wastewater and Anaerobically-Treated Industrial Effluent in a Rotating Biological Contactor

Performance of a rotating biological contactor (RBC) in treating municipal wastewater from primary sedimentation basin and anaerobically treated industrial effluent from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was investigated. The 280-L six-stage RBC pilot was operated at different organic loading rates and biodisc speeds. The overall removal efficiencies of soluble BOD decreased wit...

Treatability studies on different refinery wastewater samples using high-throughput microbial electrolysis cells (MECs).

High-throughput microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) were used to perform treatability studies on many different refinery wastewater samples all having appreciably different characteristics, which resulted in large differences in current generation. A de-oiled refinery wastewater sample from one site (DOW1) produced the best results, with 2.1±0.2 A/m(2) (maximum current density), 79% chemical ox...

Objective: To assess the performance of SBR to treat three different types of wastewater from domestic, hospital, slaughterhouse and investigate the kinetic rates of active biomass. Mass balance calculation of COD, TKN and TP was further performed to explain the mechanisms of the biological nutrient removals processed in the SBR system. The measured kinetic rates were in turn used to evaluate t...

Comparison of complex effluent treatability in different bench scale microbial electrolysis cells.

A range of wastewaters and substrates were examined using mini microbial electrolysis cells (mini MECs) to see if they could be used to predict the performance of larger-scale cube MECs. COD removals and coulombic efficiencies corresponded well between the two reactor designs for individual samples, with 66-92% of COD removed for all samples. Current generation was consistent between the reacto...
